What is Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate?
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is a steroid hormone, which plays an important role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics during puberty. Androgen, a male sex hormone is present in both males as well as females. Secretion of DHEA-S is controlled by the adrenocorticotropic hormone produced by the pituitary gland. This test measures the levels of DHEA-S in your blood. Excess production of DHEA-S results in precocious puberty in boys and excess body hair, abnormal menstrual cycle, and ambiguous external genitalia in girls. DHEA-S may be used in the differential diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome. DHEA-S may also be used in the evaluation of adrenocortical diseases, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia and adrenal tumors.
