What is Anti Hepatitis B Core Antigen?

HBV core antigen (HBcAg) is a protein of 185 amino acid that together with the HBV core antigen e (HBeAg), forms the inner core of HBV. HBcAg has a strong immunogenicity and induces the production of antibodies (anti-HBc) that persist generally for life time. Anti-HBc IgM appears shortly after the onset of HBV infection and can usually be detected in serum soon after the appearance of circulating HBsAg and HBeAg.
