Individuals produce IgM antibodies on exposure to HAV either naturally or due to vaccination. Testing for the presence of IgM antibodies against the hepatitis A virus is performed when the patient shows symptoms of hepatitis such as fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark urine and/or pale-colored stool, joint pain, jaundice.
