Herpes Simplex Virus, also known as HSV, is a member of the alpha herpesviral subfamily. The virus has a large double-stranded DNA genome, enclosed by an icosapentahedral capsid made up of capsomers. There are 2 types of Herpes virus- HSV1, which causes blisters and cold sores near the mouth or face, and HSV2, which is responsible for genital herpes, which causes lesions, pain, and itchiness in the genital area. Herpes Simplex Virus I (HSV-I)- IgG test detects the presence of lgG antibodies, which indicates the presence of HSV1 infection.
