What is Cancer antigen 125 ?
Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), a protein produced by normal ovarian cells, is used as a biomarker to monitor cancerous ovarian tumors. Normal tissues show varying levels of CA-125, while certain cancers such as those of the breast, gastrointestinal tract, and kidney also show elevated levels. Thus, though sensitive it is a non-specific tumor marker that is used in the detection and monitoring of ovarian cancer.
