What is Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test ?

The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test is used to diagnose Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a spirochete Treponema pallidum. Syphilis can cause long-term complications by invading the nervous and cardiovascular system, if not treated properly. It may be transmitted from infected mother to child during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital Syphilis. This test detects antibodies generated by the body in response to antigens produced by bacteria-damaged cells.
